BREAKING BARRIERS

IN THE CHURCH

This is a great resource available from Winnipeg Presbytery's Rainbow Ministry. To learn more about what is inside this Resource, see the Table of Contents below or open sample pages from Breaking Barriers in the Church in pdf format.

EDUCATE THE EDUCATOR

Breaking Barriers in the Church is an adaptation by Rainbow Ministry of a resource developed by the Rainbow Resource Centre of Winnipeg called Breaking Barriers in Education. The objectives of the Breaking Barriers in the Church workshop include:

  • To explore thoughts, feelings and current knowledge about sexual orientation (homosexuality, bisexuality, heterosexuality) and gender identification (transgender)
  • To probe the origins of our beliefs about sexual orientation and gender identification
  • To test attitudes towards sexual orientation and gender identification in faith communities and society
  • To understand the experiences of bisexual, gay, lesbian and/or transgender people
  • To see the effects of heterosexism and homophobia on people of all sexual orientations in faith communities
  • To uncover the biblical roots of common religious perspectives on homosexuality
  • To devise individual and institutional strategies for faith communities to become more welcoming to bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender people and their families

The Educate the Educator workshop was developed for the purpose of sustainability. As the need for such workshops greatly outweighs the available resources, we wanted to provide an opportunity to prepare people to facilitate workshops in their local congregations, presbyteries and conferences. This not only offers more people an opportunity to receive the training, but it allows for faith communities to have educated facilitators working from within their own communities, presenting the workshop on a peer to peer basis rather than relying on trainers from outside their community.

Additional Readings

We’ve put together a small selection of additional readings that a potential facilitator might want to look at.  They are not a full representation of all that is out there, but for one reason or another, we have found these to be interesting and useful.
